Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/4 cup milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 medium apple, peeled and finely chopped (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)

1 tbsp cinnamon (for topping)

2 tbsp melted butter (for coating)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick spray or a little butter.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk the granulated sugar and egg until light and fluffy. Add the applesauce, milk, and vanilla extract to the mixture, stirring until fully combined.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing gently until no flour streaks remain. Be careful not to overmix.

Fold in Apples: Gently fold in the finely chopped apple into the batter.

Fill Donut Pan: Using a spoon or a piping bag, evenly distribute the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.

Prepare Topping: While the donuts are baking, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon for topping in a small bowl. Set aside.

Cool and Coat: Once baked, allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then carefully remove them and place them on a wire rack. While they are still warm, brush each donut with melted butter and then dip into the cinnamon-sugar mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

Serve: Allow the donuts to cool completely on the wire rack. Serve fresh for the best taste, or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
