Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup dried cranberries

1 teaspoon orange zest (freshly grated)

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)

Optional glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar + 2-3 tablespoons orange juice

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cranberries and Zest: Fold in the dried cranberries and orange zest, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Form Dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Gently mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the dough. It’s okay if it’s a bit crumbly.

Shape Scones: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut the dough into 8 wedges using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter.

Egg Wash: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet, and brush the tops with the egg wash to give them a beautiful golden color.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are lightly golden brown on top.

Prepare Glaze (Optional): While the scones are baking, mix the powdered sugar with the orange juice in a small bowl to create a smooth glaze.

Cool and Glaze: Once the scones are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly. Drizzle the glaze over the warm scones for an extra touch of sweetness and citrusy flavor.

Serve: Serve warm or at room temperature, and enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee!
