Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground beef

1/2 lb ground pork

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1 large egg

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Sauce:

2 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

For Assembly:

4 hoagie rolls or sub sandwich buns

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Extra parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C).

    Make the Meatballs:

      - In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, chopped parsley, egg, minced garlic, onion powder, oregano, salt, and black pepper.

        - Mix everything until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.

          - Roll the mixture into 16 equal-sized meatballs (about 1.5 inches in diameter).

            Bake the Meatballs:

              - Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

                - Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through and browned.

                  Prepare the Sauce:

                    - While the meatballs are baking, in a saucepan over medium heat, combine the marinara sauce, dried basil, and red pepper flakes. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to enhance the flavors.

                      Combine Meatballs and Sauce:

                        - Once baked, remove the meatballs from the oven and add them directly into the simmering marinara sauce. Toss gently to coat the meatballs evenly.

                          Toast the Hoagie Rolls:

                            - If desired, lightly toast the inside of the hoagie rolls under the broiler for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

                              Assemble the Sandwiches:

                                - Spoon some of the meatball and sauce mixture into each hoagie roll.

                                  - Top each filled roll with a generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella cheese.

                                    Melt the Cheese:

                                      - Place the assembled sandwiches back into the oven (you can use the broiler) for an additional 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

                                        Garnish and Serve:

                                          - Remove from the oven, garnish with extra parsley if desired, and serve immediately, enjoying the warm, hearty flavors.
