For the Marinara Sauce:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 cans (15 ounces each) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper, to taste

Red pepper flakes (optional)

For the Sandwiches:

4 sub rolls or hoagie buns

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and egg. Season with salt and pepper.

      - Mix until well combined and form into 1.5-inch meatballs.

        Cook the Meatballs:

          - In a large skillet or saucepan, heat a splash of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking until browned on all sides (about 5-7 minutes). Remove and set aside.

            Make the Marinara Sauce:

              - In the same skillet, add olive oil, followed by the chopped onion. Sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

                - Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

                  - Pour in the crushed tomatoes, stirring to combine. Add oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper (and red pepper flakes if using).

                    - Return the meatballs to the sauce and simmer for about 20 minutes on low heat, or until cooked through.

                      Assemble the Sandwiches:

                        - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

                          - Split the sub rolls open and place on a baking sheet.

                            - Use tongs to place 2-3 meatballs in each roll and generously spoon marinara sauce over the top.

                              - Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over each sandwich.

                                Bake:

                                  - Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

                                    Serve:

                                      - Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve hot with extra marinara sauce on the side if desired.
